Eat. Pray. Love &… Biscuits-n-Barbeque
One Week Post-Layoff: All the Feels
It had officially been a week since I got laid off—and I felt every single emotion in the book. Grief, rage, hope, curiosity… you name it.
Oddly enough, drowning my sorrows in Netflix and ice cream didn’t even cross my mind.
Instead, I packed a bag and went on a road trip with my mom.
Road Trip Therapy
My parents are building a home in North Carolina, and my mom wanted to bring up her cherished collection of China and DVDs for storage. Yes, DVDs. I couldn’t resist teasing her the entire drive.
Our first stop? Buc-ee’s. If you’ve ever been, you know it’s almost impossible to be in a bad mood there. I may have overhyped it a little, but Mom was sold the minute she tried the BBQ pork.
That night, we landed in Savannah, Georgia—a city neither of us had visited before. I instantly fell in love. Spanish moss hanging from the trees, cobblestone streets, that Southern magic in the air. I’ll definitely be back.
Biscuits, Barbeque, and Detours
The next morning, we detoured through Cracker Barrel. I’m still thinking about the cowboy hat I almost bought and the buttery biscuits I definitely didn’t regret.
We eventually made it to storage, safely unloaded the precious DVDs, and capped the trip with a beautiful dinner and sunset in Myrtle Beach. The Marriott became home for a few days.
Healing in the Detours
Spending this time with my mom was healing in ways I didn’t expect. She’ll probably never realize how much I needed that trip, but I do.
Sometimes the best medicine isn’t in a prescription bottle—or a job title. It’s in the detours. The biscuits. The laughter. The love.
